Why I Chose Flodesk (After Trying Half a Dozen Other Email Platforms)

From Cubicle Emails to Creative Freedom

Over the years, I’ve used at least half a dozen email providers. They were all… fine. They did the job, they sent the emails, but the experience was like being stuck in a corporate cubicle—functional but flat, dry, and joyless.

My most recent stop before Flodesk was Mailerlite. Honestly, I still recommend it if you’re on a zero budget. Their free plan gives you plenty of room to grow, and with some elbow grease you can make it work. For scrappy beginnings, it’s a great option.

But when it came time for me to truly invest in Following Sparks, I knew I wanted something more.

IMPORTANT UPDATE SEPT 2025

Both Flodesk and Mailerlite are making changes to their plans and it will have a big impact on price!
First, Mailerlite is changing their free plan to a limit of only 500 subscribers. This will still be a great option for getting started, but you may want to decide if you will be wanting to upgrade to the paid Mailerlite plan once you hit the limit or go through the process of changing providers.

Second, Flodesk has formally finished their Beta phase and will be ending the “no limits” plan. This means that after Nov 29, all plans will be tiered and charged based on the number of subscribers you have.

They are going to honor the “no limits” pricing for anyone who signs up before Nov. 29. This is definitely something to think about if you have plans on growing your online business.

The Switch That Changed Everything

The second I switched to Flodesk, I felt like Maria in The Sound of Music—twirling on a hillside under a wide-open sky.

Flodesk wasn’t just an email platform—it was a message to myself. By signing up for a year (to grab their 50% discount), I was telling myself: I believe in what I’m building.

Emails no longer felt like a chore. Instead, they became part of my creative expression. Flodesk gave me designs that felt beautiful right out of the gate, without hours of tweaking or battling clunky interfaces. It felt fun again.

On the surface it sounds silly. But when I was using all the other email providers, my emails lacked ME. Once I logged in, I wasn’t in my sandbox free to explore, create, and play. I was there to do a job because everyone told me I needed to keep in contact with my list.

Even when I was going against formulas and customer avatars and all the shoulds of online business, the interface seemed to always be sitting on my shoulder saying “pssst…. you’ve being too weird and doing it all wrong.”

I held back even when I thought I wasn’t.

I honestly didn’t expect as much from Flodesk as I got the literal second I logged in.

It was freedom. It was play, It was aestetics. It was an interface that finally didn’t feel like a cold cubicle.

Why Flodesk Works for Me

  • Beautiful Templates: No more boring, boxy layouts. Every email looks like it belongs in a lifestyle magazine.

  • Ease of Use: The drag-and-drop editor is intuitive. No tech headache, no “why won’t this line break behave?” frustration.

  • Unlimited Everything: One price, no worrying about subscriber counts or hidden upsells.

  • Joy Factor: This is subjective, but real. It just makes me want to send emails. And it makes me giddy thinking of people opening them up!

Would I Recommend It?

If you’re just dipping your toes into email, start with Mailerlite. It’s budget-friendly (free for those just starting their email lists) and gets the job done.

But if you’re ready to make a commitment to your brand and you want your emails to feel beautiful, easy, and—dare I say—joyful? Flodesk is worth it.

I can say that because it changed the way I feel about emailing my community, and for me that’s priceless.
